With interactive learning aids and robust visual support, this book offers a foundational yet advanced understanding of the body’s intricate workings.
Since its first edition, Principles of Anatomy and Physiology has been celebrated for introducing a groundbreaking homeostatic approach to understanding human body structure and function. The 16th edition maintains this legacy, offering a benchmark in the field with its superb content and stunning visuals that create an engaging and thorough learning experience.
Renowned authors Jerry Tortora and Bryan Derrickson inspire and guide learners at all stages, from beginners to advanced students, equipping them with essential skills for academic success and future careers in health sciences.
According to the authors, “Welcome to your anatomy and physiology course! Many of you are here with aspirations for careers in nursing or allied health fields, while others may simply be interested in understanding more about their own bodies. Whatever your motivation, Principles of Anatomy and Physiology, 16th Edition offers all the resources you need to successfully tackle this challenging subject.
Over the previous fifteen editions, we have focused on providing an accurate, clearly written, and richly illustrated guide to the structure and function of the human body, connecting this knowledge to practical, everyday applications and career development. The sixteenth edition continues this mission, now with updated visuals and enhanced online resources for an even more effective learning experience.
In recent editions, we’ve gradually reduced the use of eponyms in favor of official anatomical terms, allowing both instructors and students to adjust to these updates with ease. In this edition, nearly all eponyms have been replaced with modern terminology, though a few, such as “Down syndrome” and “Alzheimer’s disease,” remain due to their prominence in medical literature and common usage.
You’ll notice that each time an eponym appears, it is italicized and directly follows the updated term in bold. The glossary and index also include these eponyms, cross-referenced with their current terms, and Appendix F provides a comprehensive list to reinforce these connections.
For anatomical terminology, we’ve primarily adopted the standards of Terminologia Anatomica (Second Edition, 2019) and Terminologia Histologia (2008). Some unofficial terms, like “plasma membrane” instead of “plasmalemma” and “neuromuscular junction” instead of “neuromuscular synapse,” are retained due to their familiarity in scientific literature. These terms are introduced with the official term in bold followed by the nonofficial term in italics, with both listed in the glossary and index for easy reference and reinforcement.”
